A Catalog of Individually Attested Pattern Submissions

Presented below is a catalog of SCA heraldic submissions using the “Individually Attested Pattern” rules, known as “IAPs,” which allow for the registration of armorial designs which don’t fall under the “Core Style” rules of the SCA’s College of Arms.

The catalog below covers submissions reviewed in LoARs from January 2007 through March 2025. It currently includes 107 IAP submissions, of which 75 were accepted and 32 were returned. (Three of the accepted submissions were revised versions following an earlier return.)

While I have attempted to be thorough, I can not guarantee that I haven’t overlooked some IAP submissions — if you find more, please let me know!

Revision History

The first version of this catalog was in this blog post from 2017, which was updated a couple of additional times over the subsequent years based on periodically trawling through OSCAR and the LoARs. It initially held 35 entries, incrementally growing to 56.

The second version was posted to this page in December 2020 with 61 entries. I decided to make a few changes to the way the information was organized, and figured that was a good opportunity to create a new document.

The third round of updates was made here in May 2025 based on searching the last few years of LoARs. My thanks to Emma de Fetherstan for sharing the data she collected in 2024, which included a number of items I had overlooked in earlier years. The catalog currently includes 106 IAPs and 8 pre-SENA regional style exceptions.

Items Other Than IAPs

While most of these entries were designated as IAPs from the outset, the list below also includes several items which were submitted without Individually Attested Pattern support but for which others attempted to provide the necessary documentation during the commentary process in order to facilitate their registration.

There have also been a couple of cases of items which were submitted as IAPs, but were ultimately accepted on the grounds of a new interpretation of the rules which meant that an IAP was no longer needed.

In addition to the IAP submissions from the era of The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory (introduced in 2012 and known as SENA), this list also includes eight submissions marked with “RfS,” which date from the earlier “Rules for Submission” that managed similar exceptions under the framework of “Regional Style Exceptions.” Although these were not judged under exactly the same rules as current IAPs, they were the closest equivalent in the RfS era, and are included in the summary tables below.

Summary Statistics

Timeline of IAP Submissions

There were a large number of these submissions in 2013-16, following the introduction of the IAP rules, with 10–14 submissions per year.

The pace has since declined somewhat since then, with 5-8 per year.
